Overview of Bombay
If you think that the Bombay cat is just like any black cat out there, you're mistaken! The Bombay is often referred to as a mini black panther because of their iconic glossy, black coat, penny-colored eyes and strong frame. This mighty kitty may look intimidating, but they are some of the friendliest cats around! Nikki Horner started creating Bombay cats in the 1950s, when she had the idea to create a mini panther with the body of a Burmese, a sleek black coat and copper eyes. To achieve this, she crossed a Burmese with an American Shorthair. The breed she created was named Bombay after Bombay, India - where black panthers are from. These jet black kitties have the laid-back nature of the American Shorthair and the playful characteristics of the Burmese. Often heavier than they look, these medium-sized (8-15 lb) kitties have a similar build to their Burmese ancestors, so imagine a bowling ball wrapped in silk. Their short glossy coat requires only weekly brushing. Sometimes just petting is enough to remove dead hair and distribute their natural oils. The Bombay has eyes ranging from gold to copper; the brighter, the better!

Personality
Often referred to as the patent leather kids with penny eyes, even the Bombay’s nose and paw pads are black too! They are chatty and friendly kitties that enjoy attention from their family and get along great with everyone! However, the Bombay is a bit like a panther when it comes to their personality too! While they can be velcro kitties (following you around and cuddling up to your legs), they sometimes need their own space or territory to feel secure as well. A tall perch where they can observe their world from a distance will help keep your Bombay's needs in check. So, if you're looking for a loyal companion who will match your all-black wardrobe, loves to cuddle and even walks on a leash, The Bombay might be the perfect cat for you.
