Belgian Laekenois

Overview

Overview of Belgian Laekenois

The Belgian Laekenois (pronounced "Lak-in-wah") is one of Belgium's four native herding breeds. Compared to the Malinois, Tervuren, and the Groenendael (Belgian Sheepdog), the Laekenois is the rarest and their coat differs by being rough and tousled, rather than smooth. Named after the town of Laeken, the Belgian Shepherd Laekenois was first tasked with guarding and tending to the flock. In addition to their herding duties, they were also responsible for guarding linen drying in fields, and later on, served as messenger dogs during World War I and II. Like many other breeds, their numbers declined during wartime, but breeders worked very hard to restore the Belgian Laekenois to their former glory after World War II. Even today, these large (55-65 lbs) pups can herd and guard their flock, while protecting their family and their property. Weekly grooming with the occasional bath should keep your Laekenois looking and feeling their best!

Personality

While retaining the Belgian Shepherd intelligence and body type, the Belgium Laekenois has remained a versatile worker that has gained notice outside of its homeland. These herding pooches are curious and respond well to training and commands, but may be suspicious of strangers.
