Cesky Terrier

Overview

The Cesky (pronounced 'chess-kee') Terrier was created by one person's vision in the mid 20th century. Czech breeder, sportsman, and geneticist František Horák, who grew up hunting in the forests outside of Prague, wanted to create a fearless working dog capable of dispatching rodents like a true terrier, work in packs like a hound, and be as gentle as a retriever at home. They are the Czech Republic’s national breed and are the result of crossing a Sealyham Terrier and a Scottish Terrier. Cesky Terriers sport a fine longhaired coat, so to keep them looking their best, you will need to clip their coat rather than hand strip them. Their weight ranges from 14-24 lbs and the only color they come in is gray.

Cesky Terrier Personality

The tenacious Cesky Terrier is less stubborn than most terriers and is highly trainable. Positive reinforcement, combined with lots of love and patience is the way to go with this breed. True to terrier style, Cesky Terriers have a high prey drive and good hunting instinct, so they may not do well with smaller pets, but in general, Cesky Terriers are calm well-behaved house dogs. They are a fairly active breed and should receive daily physical activity to avoid destructive behavior. So if you're in the market for a feisty terrier who is a lover at home and will give it their all in the field, a Cesky Terrier may be for you!
