Coton de Tulear
Overview
The Coton De Tulear is a little dog with a fancy French name and many American fans, some of which include Barbara Streisand and Debra Messing. It is believed that these adorable little pups descended from dogs that swam across the Malagasy channel following a shipwreck near Tulear, Madagascar. Named for their fluffy cotton-like coat, these dogs have become so beloved in Madagascar that they have been adopted as a symbol of national pride, even having their own celebratory day! The Coton De Tulear a.k.a ‘a Cotie’ is closely related to the Bichon Frisé and the Maltese. Though they are small (9-15 lbs), Coties love to be the center of attention and have a tendency to go on their hind legs to please people. They may not shed as much as other breeds and are relatively odor-free, but Coton De Tulears still require regular grooming when it comes to their sparkling white coat! They need a full brush out several times a week and a bath every 1-2 weeks, which is something to consider if you want to adopt a Cotie. Just remember never to brush them dry and to always use a misting spray when grooming your Coton De Tulear’s sparkling white coat!
