Curly-Coated Retriever

Overview

Curly Coat Retrievers, a.k.a. 'Curly's' are thought to be the oldest among the retriever breeds but are relative newcomers on the sporting scene compared to setters and spaniels. The Curly is thought to have descended from the now-extinct Old English Water Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels, small Newfoundland's, and Poodles. The addition of the Poodle to the breed has likely tightened the Curly's distinctive, low-shedding coat and has added to their regal carriage. They come in two distinct colors: either solid black or solid liver. Curly Coated Retrievers are still fairly popular in Australia and New Zealand as all-purpose retrievers.
