Overview
The Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retrievers originated in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the early 19th century. Also known as The Toller, they are the smallest of the retriever type dogs and have a beautiful red coat, which distinguishes them from Golden Retrievers. They were bred to entice waterfowl to the water’s edge and then retrieve them for their owner, so they have a water-repellent double coat. Tollers are highly intelligent dogs and intense while working but can be affectionate and easy-going at home. They are easy to train, but they are independent, emotionally sensitive, and like to do things their own way.
