What is Dementia in Dogs and Cats
Dementia is a general term for a group of symptoms that affect brain function, motor control and memory enough to impair day to day functioning. It is not itself a specific disease, but dementia can have a range of causes such as sustained trauma to the head, spine or nervous system. Canine cognitive disorder or feline cognitive disorder (sometimes referred to as dementia in dogs or cats) can occur for any number of reasons, including the abnormal accumulation of proteins in the brain that create a buildup of plaque, which eventually damages the nerves resulting in the loss of brain function. Other conditions such as meningitis, fibrocartilaginous (spinal) embolism, a stroke, parasites, tumors, and autoimmune disorders (with a genetic factor), may also be related to feline and canine cognitive dysfunction.
Common symptoms of Dementia in Dogs or Dementia in Cats:
- Bathroom accidents in the house
- Changes in sleep/wake patterns
- Changes in activity levels
- Changes in social interactions with people or furry friends

FAQ
Can dogs get dementia?
As your furkiddo ages, they may develop issues with their memory or motor control. A common problem for senior dogs is a condition similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans known as canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS). CDS can occur for a number of reasons, like a sustained brain injury or a buildup of abnormal proteins, which eventually damage nerves and results in the loss of brain function, nerve control and coordination.
Can cats get Alzheimer’s?
Like their canine counterparts, cats can indeed develop a feline form of Alzheimer's where their brain function, memory and muscle coordination deteriorates over time.
Pet experts suggest that a balanced diet, mental stimulation and companionship can reduce the risk of dementia in cats and humans alike.
What are the symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction?
Common symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD):
- Bathroom accidents in the house
- Changes in sleep/wake patterns
